Wanganui City (population 40,000) is one of New Zealand's oldest containing a fine range of historic buildings of national importance as well a fascinating history.

The 110 year old coal fired paddle steamer 'P.S.Waimarie' operates on the river, daily in summer, and the city is renowned for its art gallery and glass blowing industry. The museum has a most impressive Maori collection.

There are three national parks and ski fields within an hour and a half drive and many interesting local walks. The mild climate, a feature of the area, is conducive to the range of fine gardens in the district.

The river has a romantic history and is one of the country's premier scenic attractions.
